Creating a sustainable future is important for Brent Cross. As such, we are aiming to become the most sustainable shopping centre possible by undertaking environmental measures. These measures have helped us achieve ISO 14001 certification. We're also working with our retailers to communicate environmental strategies so that individual stores can also be environmentally proactive.
What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for excellence in environmental management. By setting up an environmental management system (EMS), Brent Cross is able to identify areas to improve on throughout the landlord operations.
What has Brent Cross currently done?
Brent Cross has taken a holistic approach to environmental management, supported by both the General Manager and senior management team. An environmental policy has been formalised, and is viewable both online and in hardcopy in the Management Suite Reception.
Brent Cross is currently devising strategies to improve water, waste, and energy efficiencies through its environmental management system. Brent Cross has obtained the Carbon Trust Standard, awarded to organisations that demonstrate a commitment to reducing carbon emissions year-on-year. We have also increased the percentage of wastes diverted from landfill by increasing how much waste is recycled. Brent Cross has obtained ISO 14001 certification, lending credence to our environmental management system and sustainability initiatives.
Brent Cross has developed a Biodiversity Action Plan to protect and enhance a variety of species on site and make Brent Cross an even more pleasant place to visit. To date, we have been proactive with removing the invasive Japanese Knotweed, collaborating with the Environment Agency to ensure that our methods are effective and environmentally-harmless at the same time. We have also provided homes to birds and wildlife through building sparrow and hedgehog boxes, and by planting more greenery around the building and surrounding landscaping.
Brent Cross also recognises the dedication our retailers put into becoming more environmental friendly; last year, four Green Awards were given out at the Customer Service Awards to applaud both individual and corporate efforts in making Brent Cross more sustainable. The awards will be presented again this October. A Green Sub-Committee continues to run as part of the Brent Cross Association, demonstrating how landlords and tenants work together to foster positive environmental change.
Brent Cross partnered up with Global Action Plan and their Climate Squad team, who delivered Operation: Pump it Up. This scheme enabled customers to receive free tyre and pressure checks, with the fully-trained volunteers then pumping up the tyres to appropriate pressures. By doing this, Brent Cross customers saved over £10,000 and 25 tonnes of carbon through reducing fuel use by 9,212 litres. To find out more, please visit globalactionplan.org.uk
