10 January 2004 TWO BIG THANK YOU'S The Gift Tree - helping put a smile on the face of disadvantaged children in Barnet Throughout December 2002, the Gift Tree scheme was in operation at Brent Cross. The initiative was designed in association with Barnet Council to help ensure that children in temporary accommodation within the Borough received at least one Christmas present on Christmas Day. Children's names and ages were written on tags and placed on a Christmas tree within Brent Cross. Customers then picked a child's name off the Tree and bought a Christmas present for that child. The present was wrapped free of charge by Wrapport and distributed by Barnet Council. 250 presents were purchased by shoppers and distributed to the children. Tom Nathan, Centre Director, Brent Cross, commented: "The generosity of Brent Cross shoppers for children in need within Barnet has been outstanding. It is particularly heart-warming to experience such kindness at Christmas-time in the knowledge that our shoppers' gesture will help make it a special time for the less fortunate in our community. I just want to say a huge thank you on behalf of the Centre, Barnet Council and, most importantly, the children." Brent Cross shoppers raise a whopping £20,000 for charity Brent Cross shoppers again showed their big-heartedness in the run-up to Christmas, contributing nearly £20,000 to charity. Fifteen charities were given permission to collect money within Brent Cross between mid-November and 23rd December, many entering into the spirit with bands and choirs on the performance area on the Brent Cross Grotto. They were helped by ten local schools, which performed modern and traditional Christmas music in and around the Centre.
