10 May 2004 FORMER ENGLAND CAPTAIN STUART PEARCE MBE RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS Ex-England Captain and local hero Stuart Pearce will be taking a trip down memory lane on Sunday 16 May when he brings the Renault Vandurance Health Roadshow to Brent Cross Shopping Centre. Brent Cross shoppers will be able to chat with Stuart, get an autograph and even challenge him to a fitness test! Health and fitness has always been important to Stuart, both as a player and now as a coach for Manchester City. He is appearing at Brent Cross on Sunday as part of Renault's 'Vandurance: more oomph for van drivers' campaign. The Vandurance roadshows have been designed to help tackle some of the health problems suffered by one of the UK's hardest working groups - 'white van man', but all visitors to Brent Cross are welcome to take advantage of the free BUPA health checks and Vision Express sight screenings on offer, as well as trying out their skills on Formula 1 simulators. Stuart, who lived in Kingsbury from the age of 5 to 21, reminisces, 'I remember the shopping centre being built in the early seventies, the first of its kind in the country I believe, being all under cover. In fact, I chose Brent Cross Shopping Centre as the subject for a school Geography project. The staff there were very obliging and gave me lots of literature and information to help me with my project. It was a great place to shop and meet up with friends, especially when it was pouring with rain!' One of Stuart's favourite stores for shopping at Brent Cross was Fenwick, which remains a firm favourite with customers today. However, he will find Brent Cross Shopping Centre much changed since his youth, with now over 100 stores including Hugo Boss, Hilfiger, Fat Face and Massimo Dutti and restaurants such as chic Carluccio's in Fenwick and the recently opened trendy Wagamaga. The Renault Vandurance Roadshow will be located in the Brent Cross Shopping Centre's Leyfield Road Car park (opposite John Lewis) on Sunday 16 May from 11am to 5pm.
