BRENT CROSS 1945 CELEBRATIONS TO HIGHLIGHT BLACK AND ASIAN CONTRIBUTION EFFORT

Many people are aware of the contribution made by Gurkhas to the fighting strength of the British Army, and the involvement of troops from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa during the two World Wars.

However, starting on VJ-Day, 15th August 2005 for two weeks, Brent Cross Shopping Centre will educate its shoppers about the vital, yet little known, contribution made by military and civilian personnel from Africa, the Indian sub-continent, the rest of Asia (including Hong Kong) and the West Indies, through The Ministry of Defence's award winning 'We Were There' exhibition.

There is also an accompanying booklet and a website www.mod.uk/wewerethere where further information is available.

In the introduction to the exhibition, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Sir Michael Walker says that 'This exhibition reminds us that those from all ethnic origins who are serving now, and those who will be serving in the future, do so within a proud tradition which deserves greater awareness and respect.'

The fortnight-long celebrations at the centre will also include a replica Spitfire an authentic Children's Blitz Night, Dancing from BBC's Strictly Dance Fever's Natasha and Paul, Big Band music, 1940's radio station broadcasts, and children's wartime craft workshops. There are also comprehensive exhibits from the RAF Museum, the Ministry of Defence, the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women (AJEX), and the Royal British Legion.
