BRENT CROSS SHOPPING CENTRE WINS GREEN APPLE AWARD FOR RECYCLING

Brent Cross Shopping Centre has won a coveted Green Apple award for more than doubling its rate of cardboard recycling throughout the Centre, minimising the amount of waste sent for landfill. Green Apples are awarded by the Green Organisation, an independent environment group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental endeavour.

The award winning cardboard recycling scheme was put into place by Brent Cross Shopping Centre's service company MITIE to bring it in line with Brent Cross owners Hammerson's and Standard Life's Environmental Policies. The new scheme replaced enclosed wheeled bins with split level wheeled cages; the top half of the cage for flat-packed cardboard and the bottom half for bagged refuse.

This system has made it easier for all Brent Cross retailers to segregate cardboard for recycling from general waste leading to greater participation by stores and substantially decreasing the instances of stored cardboard being contaminated by other waste.

MITIE are also introducing new, more efficient compactors across the Brent Cross site and these will enable 15% more cardboard to be packed into each container. The increased efficiency also reduces the number of vehicles driving to and from Brent Cross, therefore making a cost saving as well as reducing carbon emissions around the area.

MITIE says, 'The cardboard recycling scheme has been very successful and could easily be rolled out to other shopping malls. MITIE and Brent Cross Shopping Centre are continuously working together to increase recycling rates and are currently looking at introducing recycling schemes for office paper, wood and internal mall recycling.'
