15 March 2006 THIRTY YEARS AT BRENT CROSS Brent Cross Shopping Centre yesterday rewarded its staff who have been with the shopping centre since it first opened, 30 years ago this month. The 36 loyal staff were treated to a champagne breakfast and a ceremony to commemorate their long-standing service at the UK's first ever enclosed shopping mall. The staff, from shops such as John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Fenwick, were each given a short presentation personally thanking them for their hard work at Brent Cross over the last 30 years. With over 100, 000 people having worked at Brent Cross since it opened, the ceremony focussed on the loyalty and longevity of these core 36 members, and thanked them for their hard-work and dedication to the centre. Since Brent Cross first opened in 1976, staff have served over 600 million people, with an average of about 350, 000 shoppers passing through per week. The number of shops in the centre has grown from 75 to 122, and with recent new additions like the Apple Store and Rigby & Peller, the centre looks like it will continue this growth into the future. George Dormon of Hendon, who works in Waitrose at Brent Cross said, "Brent Cross is a really nice environment to work in. The centre is very clean and tidy, and there is never any trouble. The ceremony yesterday was lovely - it was great to be appreciated along with my fellow colleagues, and it was quite an emotional day. We were each presented with a small engraved crystal ornament, which is something special to keep permanently. I love working at Brent Cross - it is such a friendly environment and we are well looked after here." Norman Black, head of marketing at Brent Cross, comments, "It was great to be able to reward and appreciate our staff who have been with Brent Cross since its very beginnings in 1976. The centre has changed a great deal since then - we've nearly doubled in size and have watched a number of fashions and styles come and go." Norman continues, "We are very proud of everything that Brent Cross has achieved during this time - we were the first centre in the country to introduce late-night shopping, and we are also still the only centre in London to offer free parking. We could not have achieved this success without the dedication and hard-work of our staff, and it was pleasure to take this opportunity to thank them for all that they have done."
