24 April 2006 SHOP LIKE A LONDON MARATHON RUNNER What can a day's shopping and running the London Marathon possibly have in common? They are both an amazing way to keep fit and blitz calories. When the 40, 000 runners took part in the London Marathon yesterday, their valiant efforts will have burnt a total of 104 million calories - that's an average of 2, 600 calories each. On the same day, 54,960 people [Rob, please can you check this number?] visited Brent Cross shopping centre in north-west London. Shopping may be perceived as an easy, light-weight past time, but in fact those determined shoppers burnt a whopping 18.3 million calories collectively - that means an amazing 1, 000 each during a five-hour spree. So just how can such a past time possibly reap such marvellous benefits? In addition to the obliteration of so many calories, the constant walking (no sitting down for a sly cappuccino!) will tone the lower body, especially if you take the stairs as opposed to the lift or escalator. Lifting and carrying heavy bags is great for working out the arms and toning the biceps. In addition to all the physical benefits, the psychological ones are endless. Doing something enjoyable means your body releases endorphins - natural "feel good" chemicals - so you get a euphoric rush similar to eating chocolate. Furthermore, shopping with friends hones your social skills, as well as boosting your confidence and improving your mental wellbeing. Norman Black, head of marketing at Brent Cross, adds, "It's a little known fact, but serious shoppers can expect to exercise their bodies almost on a par with that of a marathon runner, the difference being they get to indulge in their favourite hobby as well. "So for those of us not able to take part in the London marathon, we can take heart in the fact that our weekly shopping can actually have a positive impact on our health and wellbeing as well."
