Football Gloom = Retail Boom

It may have been doom and gloom for England footie fans this weekend, but figures show there was a shopping boom as London turned to its favourite past time (well, second to football) to mourn being booted out of the World Cup competition.

Despite the hangovers and sore throats from screaming at the referee, Brent Cross shoppers, men and women alike, got over their devastation of their team being beaten by Portugal in the quarter finals, by turning to some much needed retail therapy - and in their hunt for a summer sale bargain, they proved truly second to none!

Sunday's footfall figures into Brent Cross, North West London's favourite shopping centre, were up by more than a quarter versus the same day last year, also helped by a later start to the summer sales.

Corrine Sweet, shopping psychologist and Brent Cross local, explains, "Psychological research suggests that we get a rush of dopamine, a chemical in the blood, from the experience of shopping. It can also boost serotonin, which can have an effect similar to Prozac, so a quick dash to the shops can create a 'feel-good factor'. This could explain why Londoners turned to Brent Cross after England got knocked out of the World Cup."

So, it may be all over for Sven, and Beckham may have resigned as captain of England, but the WAGs can rest assured that Brits still hold the Cup for the best shoppers on the planet!
