LONDONERS FOREGO SEX FOR SLEEP

Stressed out Londoners are turning their backs on their relationships and are choosing to sleep-in on a Sunday rather than having sex with their partners.

A new survey into Londoners' spare-time habits revealed that both men and women are feeling the effects of the UK's long working hours and would choose to catch up on sleep lost during the week, and would even read Sunday's newspapers, before having 'hanky panky'.

Overall, having sex came fourth (13%) when respondents were asked how they would spend an extra hour on a Sunday morning. Catching up on sleep came first (42%), followed by reading the papers (18%) and recovering from the night before (17%).

The research, conducted by Brent Cross Shopping Centre, also looked at the shopping patterns of men and women in the Capital. Respondents were questioned about the time of day they preferred to shop, whether they would shop during the week or over the weekend, and who they like to shop with.

In general, Londoners' favourite time of day to shop is in the afternoon after they've 'pottered about' in the morning. However, further analysis by Brent Cross found that men are more likely to shop early in the morning (32%) as their body clocks are set to the weekday alarm call. Women would choose to have a few extra hours to sleep and either shop in the afternoon (31%) or late morning (28%).

Almost half of respondents would prefer to shop during the week (45%) if they had the time, as they believe the shops aren't as busy. Those who did prefer to shop on the weekend would choose Saturday (32%) over Sunday (23%) as the longer shopping hours give them more time to browse.

Around two-thirds of Londoners want the comfort of shopping with someone else and the reassurance of a second opinion. Although, for women, the lure of shopping alone was strong with 42% saying they would shop by themselves - perhaps looking for a treat after a hard week. Family members are typically the shopping partner of choice for both sexes (25%), with friends coming in a close second for women (21%).

Norman Black, head of marketing for Brent Cross, said: "We've seen a real shift in consumer patterns over the past year or so. The long-hours working culture is having a real impact on how Londoners choose to spend their weekends. The need to catch up on sleep, plus the desire to spend quality time with family and friends, is pushing people to cram even more into an already busy week.

"This is one of the reasons behind our decision to open the shopping centre an hour later on Sundays. We want our customers to be able to have that extra time in bed - whether it's to sleep, read the papers or perhaps even encourage them to reignite passions!"

Brent Cross has changed its opening hours by opening one hour later at 12 noon on a Sunday and closing at 6pm. For full details visit the link below
