SOCKS, DUCKS, DINOSAURS AND WHOOPEE CUSHIONS WHAT'S HOT AT BRENT CROSS THIS CHRISTMAS

Chocolate, underwear, smellies?there are a few items that are guaranteed to be given as Christmas presents each year, but recent research among the 120 stores at Brent Cross Shopping Centre has thrown up a few surprises for the top selling gifts of 2006. From whoopee cushions to men's velvet jackets, it looks like Christmas in London this year certainly won't be dull!

Clothes
Gone are the days of "novelty" Christmas jumpers, as some of the top selling clothes at Brent Cross this year are:
"Men's black socks, an old classic
"Men's velvet jackets, to be teamed with jeans to create a new up-to-date look.
"Cashmere, a fabric which is now more affordable then ever before.
"Control underwear, so ladies can still fit into their party frocks and look fabulous, even after a little over-indulgence.

Food
Christmas revellers are moving away from the traditional Christmas dinner as the effects of our busy lifestyle and the influence of TV chefs shows in the top choices this year:
"Duck is becoming an increasingly popular choice for the main Christmas meal.
"For traditionalists, turkey crowns reduce the time spent preparing the meal and free up more time for some proper festive celebrations.
"Bucks Fizz - still the staple drink of any Christmas party, but now ideally with freshly-squeezed orange juice.
"Citrus fruits - an obligatory stocking filler.

Toys
Perhaps the most surprising revelation of all came from the list of top selling toys:
"The whoopee cushion - a classic toy that is selling like hotcakes at the Centre.
"Deal or No Deal, the board game from the popular TV quiz show.
"The Roboraptor, a realistic electronic dinosaur model complete with multiple sensors throughout its body and three separate "moods" - hunter, cautious and playful.

Norman Black, head of marketing at Brent Cross, said, "It's always interesting to follow the Christmas trends and see what the top seller is each year. Some items - like socks and citrus fruit - consistently make the list. However this year we are seeing new favourites, with velvet jackets proving to be fashionable presents after a gap of perhaps 30 years, perhaps due to the resurgent popularity of Strictly Come Dancing. On our Festive tables, we're seeing duck become more prominent, possibly influenced by the popularity of TV chefs, who encourage us all to cook different meats at this time of the year."
