06 February 2007 Love is in the air at Brent Cross! One in four men buy themselves Valentine's Day gifts, according to a recent survey by Brent Cross Shopping Centre. The survey, of both men and women aged 18 - 65, probed the nation's romantic habits by examining their opinions of Valentine's Day and how they like to spend it. Citing reasons such as "any excuse to buy myself something" and "it cheers me up in case no one else gives me anything," the surprising results challenge the perception of men as being typically unromantic and indifferent to the day. A third of both sexes admitted to exaggerating the number of cards they've received. Surprisingly, the research revealed that men are more likely to send themselves a Valentine's card, with 20% of men pretending to receive a card from someone else, as opposed to 16% of women. Not merely a once-off whim, a very persistent 3% of women admit to sending themselves a card every year! Although 98% of women claimed to celebrate the day compared to only 91% of men, more men (91%) than women (87%) regularly bought Valentine's Day gifts - perhaps women feel it is their day to be spoilt? Norman Black, head of marketing at Brent Cross, said, "Valentine's Day is typically for sharing with the one you love, but it seems that it is increasingly becoming a day for sharing with the one you love the most - yourself! It seems that some people are coming to see Valentine's Day as a day to treat and indulge themselves, but it's still a day when men, in particular, are expected to buy something for their 'significant other'. But a word of caution: if anyone tells you they've received a lot of cards this year then beware - there's a good chance they could have sent them to themselves!" |
