Brent Cross Shopping Centre Awarded Top 10 position in the Sunday Times Best Green Companies 2008

The 50 Best Green Companies have been revealed in the inaugural Sunday Times Green List, with Brent Cross Shopping Centre gaining recognition as the tenth greenest company in London.

The Sunday Times’ Green List is a definitive guide to companies with the most radically improved environmental performances. Uniquely, the survey takes account of the views of employees - who get to rate their organisation’s green credentials - as well as assessing the environmental performance, policies and practices of businesses.

Brent Cross beat a host of other companies to make it into the coveted top ten position in London, at an awards ceremony held on London’s South Bank on May 14. Brent Cross was ranked tenth greenest company in London and tenth best small company with high/medium environmental impacts in the UK. Its overall national ranking was 33rd in the top 50 Green List.

Respecting the environment is a significant part of working at Brent Cross. A new waste management system deals with the annual 3,000 tons of refuse produced by the Centre. This ensures the vast majority is recycled, leaving less than 3% for landfill.

Two hundred houses could be powered for a year with the energy saving light bulbs installed throughout the centre. New light fittings have also been installed in the multi-storey car parks, which use less energy than the old strip lights. Training is given to the centre’s staff on green issues and they also receive regular updates on environmental matters from the company.

As part of London Sustainability Weeks, the shopping centre has held Green Matters, an interactive event looking to encourage shoppers to tackle climate change. The third Green Matters is to be held in June 2008.
